Practical money-saving tips for booking cheaper holidays at home and abroad

There are plenty of bargains to be had over the holidays as sun-seekers rush to get away from it all after months of travel restrictions, but the costs won’t stay low for too long. But with the cost of living crisis becoming more and more apparent, concerns about the price of a trip are emerging.

According to recent research, almost 20% of UK travelers are looking for tips to save money on their next trip. Expedia and Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) share their ultimate guide to travel hacks to make it easier to book a vacation in 2022.

Based on ARC data, average ticket prices (ATP), airfares bottomed out in December 2020 and January 2021, although travel confidence rose. However, with a steady increase in demand, particularly over the summer, ticket prices have started to normalize to pre-pandemic levels.

Meanwhile, ATPs for international flights have increased steadily over the year, but prices are still on average 15% lower than in 2019. Knowing which day to book, how far in advance and which day travel is essential to keep costs down.

Optimal booking window

  • For domestic flights, the British have started to book their trips further in advance. The share of flights booked nine weeks or more in advance has increased from an average of 20% in 2019 to an average of 25% in 2021.
  • For international flights, the share of flights booked nine weeks or more in advance increased from an average of 40% in 2019 to an average of 45% in 2020 and 50% in 2021.

Best day of the week to book

  • Book a domestic flight on a Sunday rather than a Friday and you can save around 20%.
  • For international flights, the same rules apply but the saving is a little less than 15%.

Ideal day of the week for traveling

  • Travelers generally think that Tuesday is the best day of the week to fly domestically, but the ideal day is actually Friday with savings of around 20%.
  • Again, flying abroad on a Friday will help save around 10%.

Best month to travel

Being flexible when it comes to flight is a great way to save on flights, so when booking a holiday it can be worth looking at flights first before deciding on the month.

  • If you’re traveling to the UK, the best month to go is November, when it’s possible to save up to 45% on costs.
  • If you’re escaping to somewhere a little more exotic, the ideal month to travel is September with savings of up to 40%.
