The only thing experts say do now if you want to travel abroad in 2022
Recently, we brought you some tips to overcome the obstacles of international travel in these uncertain times. But one thing is certain: if you want to travel outside the United States in 2022, you will need a passport.
One of the first things you need to do to prepare for your future trip is to check the expiration date of your passport. Check that the people traveling with you are ready to go on this front as well. Remember that children’s passports expire every 5 years if issued before the age of 16.
“Even if you are a year away from having to renew your passport, do it now,” warns our trusted travel advisor Carie Skerritt. “You don’t want to risk having to cancel a trip because your passport has expired.” Keep in mind that most countries require that you have at least 6 months on your passport to cross their borders. Skerritt says she has seen some people wait for their passports for up to 4 to 6 months.
In July, we reported that passport wait times could reach 18 weeks, more than double the average time to pandemic of 6 to 8 weeks. As of October 8, the government reports that routine processing times take “up to 14 weeks from the day an application is submitted.” The State Department echoed Skerritt’s sentiment, urging those who need to renew or apply for a new passport to “apply at least 4-6 months before the intended trip.”
Accelerating treatment takes up to 10 weeks and costs an additional $ 60. While it is possible to renew in person at an agency or passport center in an emergency, the number of appointments is limited. Those looking to renew at a center or agency must have international travel within the next 72 hours (3 business days) and must meet the requirements on the State Department’s Get My Passport Fast page.
Don’t count on the standard 14 week processing time. There could be complications which make the process longer. The most common problem with passport applications is an unacceptable photo. There could also be a problem with your birth certificate. Applicants must submit both the original or certified birth certificate (with the seal of the issuing authority) and a photocopy.
If you need to apply for or renew your passport for an upcoming international trip, do so now so you don’t have to worry about it. Here is our handy guide on how to apply for a US passport.
